Do I want us to get back together? Not really. I hold dearly the time we had, but I am also very glad I no longer have to do integrals. My friend, the calculator, is perhaps the only one that understands my quadratic struggle. No ex-boyfriend made me cry as much as my math finals. On the other hand, I do miss the version of me who actually believed that derivatives were child’s play. That version of me was a math genius. Now, I don’t even remember what derivatives exist for. As I said, math and I have distanced ourselves.

I think our relationship had a turning point when equations started to have more letters than the short stories I wrote for English class. That’s when I really had to take a break and think to myself: Why on earth would a guy named John need to urgently calculate the area remaining between the intersection of a circle and a triangle in order to be able to fit his next flat TV screen properly? Just use a measuring tape, my friend. Also, Jessica, are you alright? Why do you continue to buy so many watermelons after all this time? Either they’re chemically engineered to last forever, or you’ve got a weird watermelon smuggling business under the table that’s been functioning for years. In either case, chill, Jessica.

We truly couldn’t find a way to communicate with each other; even my English knowledge struggled to understand what on earth I was supposed to solve after finding X. It's been a couple of years since we last spoke, but like every good toxic relationship, I still think about it a lot more than I should. In any case, I still love you, Math, but I am glad that we are keeping some distance. If we ever decide to give it another try, please be sure to start showing up with solutions instead of problems. I really believe we could be happy together, as long as you don’t involve any irrationality in this love equation.
